If you’re longing to escape the dull British weather, exploring Europe is a great way to soak up some sun if you’re still seeking summer thrills in September.

To aid holidaymakers in finding the cheapest deals, OMIO has researched alternate routes to Italy from and found that taking a ferry from Marseille, France to Sardinia, Italy, is cheaper than flying by £180!

The ferry departs from the Port of Toulon, which has a half-hourly express train service from Marseille. Marseille is renowned for its beauty; reviewers have reported the train journey as picturesque and beautiful.

The ferry journey takes around 13 hours, with overnight options available so you can arrive in Porto Torres, Sardinia just in time for a lovely Mediterranean breakfast at the port. There are plenty of ways to spend your time near the port if you’re not ready to check in at the hotel right away, including enjoying the small but intimate beach Spiaggia di Balai nearby. And for sightseeing tourists, the Basilica of San Gavino also stands a short bus ride away, perfect for making the most of your journey early on.

At the time of writing, return flights from Marseille to Sardinia cost around £250 for one person and £1,142 for a family of four with two stops, through Paris and Milan. As the flights lack the option of a direct route, the Ferry going the same route might be an alternative option that some may overlook. Definitely worth considering as the savings make it worthwhile. For a family of four, the ferry costs around just over £200 and £70-£80 for a single person, making a considerable price difference compared to flights.

Sardinia is reported to have some of the best beaches in Europe with the clearest blue waters you would think were from a tropical island. So if you’re itching for a quick relaxing getaway this destination is not to be missed.
