Go body rafting in Hokkaido
Cool off with some water sports activities such as body rafting down the Tokachi River in Hokkaido. A twist on the traditional water rafting, visitors are given an inflated board to slide their way through the powerful currents. Being so much closer to the water compared to traditional methods, every wave feels intense, making for a thrilling adventure. After, unwind at an onsen to relax the muscles following an active day.
Try diving around Okinawa’s hidden gems

Home to over 200 of the world’s species of coral, the waters of Okinawa bring visitors from all over the world to explore its serene nature. . Spanning over 1,000km, the main island is a great dive location, however some of the best dive spots are actually located along the outlying islands, including the Miyako islands and Kerama islands. Home to an abundance of marine life, in the summer months visitors can expect to see manta rays, vibrant and colourful tropical fish, hammerhead sharks and even shipwrecks to explore.

Hike the Hitachinokuni Long Trail in Ibaraki Prefecture

Partly opened in March 2024, this 200km long trail is set to stretch a total of 320km once fully opened. Spanning six cities and towns in the northern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, the trail traverses natural scenic spots including mountains, oceans, rivers and waterfalls, warm satoyama landscapes, historical remains and old townscapes. The Hitachinokuni Long Trail connects the stories of the region, allowing visitors to immerse in the charm and story of northern Ibaraki Prefecture as they pass through villages and mountains, encounter local daily life, culture, breathtaking natural scenery and even historical ruins. The train is most special in the autumn combining cooler weather with beautiful autumnal foliage.
Take a cycling tour through the Nasu highlands
Known for its rolling hills, crisp mountain air and vibrant landscapes, Nasu Highlands is a haven for cyclists. Autumn is an especially magical time to explore the area as the hills and forests burst into colour with a fiery palette of red, orange and yellow. Ride along scenic forest roads, pass through charming villages and pedal alongside seemingly endless agricultural fields on multi-day bike trips or easier one-day guided bike tours. Explore magical landscapes covered in snow
The Hida mountains, which form the northern range of the Japanese Alps, are renowned for their dramatic transformation into the winter season with snowcapped mountains peaking in the distance. Located across Gifu, Nagano and Toyama prefectures, the area provides ideal conditions for winter sports. Skiers and snowboarders are drawn to the region’s well-equipped resorts, such as those near Takayama and in the Okuhida Onsen area, where runs suit all skill levels and offer stunning alpine views. Those seeking a slower pace amongst the beauty can opt for guided snowshoeing tours where explorers venture into pristine forests with frozen waterfalls and snow-covered valleys.
Stand in awe of the magnificent icicles of Chichibu

Just over two hours from Tokyo lies a spectacular sight that can only be experienced during the coldest months of the year. In Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, as the weather gets cold, giant icicles form in three different locations around the City, turning plants, rocks and cliff surfaces into shimmering icy spectacles. The magnificent Misotsuchi Icicles, the only natural ones found in Chichibu, form along the Arakawa River and can reach heights of 8m by 30m at their peak. On some winter nights, visitors can catch special illumination displays that bring the icicles to life with lights and animations.
In the Spring…
Row through a deep volcanic gorge in Kyushu

Located in Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu, the Takachiho Gorge is truly a sight to behold. A volcanic gorge formed by columnar jointing is the result of the rapid cooling of an ancient lava flow. The gorge offers spectacular views and is best experienced by rowing boats guiding visitors directly beneath the dramatic 17-metre Manai Falls. Whilst there, marvel at the gorge’s unique basalt rock formations – one of Kyushu’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Head to the observation deck afterwards for an alternative view of the gorge.
Conquer the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route
Hike through some of Japan’s most breathtaking alpine scenery along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Stretching across 37km of the Japanese Northern Alps, this popular mountain sightseeing route is open from mid-April to late November and connects several dramatic landscapes, including the towering snow walls of the “yuki-no-otani” corridor in spring (open to pedestrians from mid-April to mid-June), to the volcanic terrain and wetlands around Murodo and the engineering marvel of Kurobe Dam.
