Best Used Cars for Young Drivers

When it comes to buying a first car, affordability, reputation, and online buzz can all influence a young driver’s choice. But which used cars strike the right balance?

To find out, the car insurance experts at Compare the Market analysed used car data across average price, sentiment scores, and global search volume to determine the most popular second-hand cars for younger motorists in 2025.

And the results are in: The Honda Civic takes the crown as the top-ranked used car for young drivers. With a budget-friendly average price of £8,600, more than 54 million global searches, and a strong reputation for reliability, the Civic scored a leading 82.02 out of 100 in the final rankings.

Close behind is the Kia Sportage, scoring 74.67, followed by the Volkswagen Golf (74.78) and the Suzuki Swift (70.30). All of these models come with a price tag under £13,000 and remain popular choices thanks to their practicality, compact size, and fuel efficiency—key considerations for younger drivers.

Here’s how the top 5 used cars for young drivers ranked:

Rank Model Avg Price (GBP) Car Model Search Volume Total Score (Max 100)
Honda Civic 8,600 54,880,000 82.02
Volkswagen Golf 12,400 42,550,000 74.78
Kia Sportage 10,300 40,090,000 74.67
Suzuki Swift 8,000 25,080,000 70.30
Toyota Corolla 12,800 42,550,000 69.60

The Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3 also rank highly, reflecting ongoing demand for compact sedans that balance style and substance. Despite offering more space, SUVs like the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 still make the top 10, though their higher prices may be a barrier for some.

Interestingly, the Tesla Model Y comes in mid-table with a score of 56.20, largely driven by its massive online search volume—over 35 million—despite an average used price of £24,900. While still out of reach for many younger buyers, it shows growing interest in EVs from the next generation of drivers.

On the other end of the scale, larger and more expensive vehicles like the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Land Cruiser scored lowest overall, reflecting their limited appeal to cost-conscious drivers just starting.
