Interior design experts are predicting a new trend that’s set to dominate homes this season, the “frazzled English woman aesthetic”. According to Plank Hardware, searches for the term have surged by 30% month-on-month and 1,000% year-on-year on Pinterest – showing that what started as a viral fashion trend is now influencing the way we style our living spaces.
Originally inspired by the charm of early 2000s rom-coms, this aesthetic is rooted in cosy chaos and an effortless, lived-in vibe. While the look first gained attention with memes featuring romcom leads like Bridget Jones and Iris Simpkins from The Holiday, it gained serious traction when SS24 catwalks showcased the aesthetic in full force.
Much like its fashion counterpart, which layers cardigans, cable-knit jumpers and frilly blouses in muted tones with accents of rich burgundy and mustard yellow, the interior style follows suit.
As the trend evolves from fashion into interior design, it intertwines with the popular cottagecore trend, blending rustic charm with modern elements for a warm and inviting home environment.
“Expect to see relaxed seating arrangements, layered textiles and a mix of vintage and modern furnishings that speak to a life lived, rather than curated. We often see catwalk trends evolve into interior design and we expect this to be a big hit this autumn and winter”, says Tom Revill, creative director of Plank Hardware.
“The aesthetic is characterised by neutral tones, textured fabrics and intentionally “undone” looks, such as casually draped throws and imperfectly stacked books, that add to the warm, inviting atmosphere. It mirrors the mindset of those who prioritise comfort and practicality while still maintaining a distinctive personal style.
“The aesthetic also leans into the ‘intentional clutter’ trend, where people are embracing the idea that your home is meant to be lived in and that clutter is an organic part of that”.
Similar to cottagecore, the aesthetic embraces a rustic vibe with materials, patterns and colours that evoke the cosiness of English countryside living.
Tom continues, “One of the standout materials in this interior trend is antique brass, which has seen a resurgence recently thanks to its timeless elegance and versatility. Whether used in lighting fixtures, picture frames or hardware, antique brass adds a touch of warmth and nostalgia to any space. Its subtle sheen enhances the cosy, lived-in feel of this aesthetic while offering a contrast to softer materials like linen and wool.
“Bobbin furniture, inspired by the heritage of English craftsmanship, also lends a whimsical touch to the frazzled English woman aesthetic, offering an inviting balance of comfort and artistry. Interiors this season are going to reflect the same balance of cosiness and elegance that we’re seeing in the aesthetic.
