Denmark tops the list for same-sex wedding destinations scoring high in all the factors like wedding venues, average wedding costs, and LGBTQ+ friendliness (indicated by World Equality Index).

Denmark tops the list of same-sex wedding destinations with a composite score of 76.11. The average wedding cost is about $12,150, making it a relatively affordable option compared to other top-ranking countries. Denmark, along with Norway (coming second), boasts the highest level of the equality index, securing its leading position.
Norway ranks second with a composite score of 74.88. Although Norway offers fewer wedding venues than Denmark, the average wedding cost is lower at $10,459. Norway’s high equality index makes it an ideal destination for same-sex weddings.
Uruguay follows closely in third place with a score of 74.48. As a progressive leader in Latin America, Uruguay legalized same-sex marriage and stands out as an excellent destination with an average wedding cost of $15,000 and the second-highest equality index.
Germany is fourth with a score of 73.67, offering the second most wedding venues at 2,173. Germany shares the same high equality index level as the Netherlands but features a lower average wedding cost at $16,083.
The Netherlands is placed fifth with a composite score of 72.94. Known for being the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2001, the Netherlands offers more than 800 venues, although it has the highest average wedding cost at $23,371. For those ready to spend big, the Netherlands is a prime choice.
Sweden, with a composite score of 72.06, ranks sixth. With over 400 venues, the average wedding in Sweden costs around $17,400.
Argentina ranks seventh with a score of 71.60. It offers 265 venues and boasts one of the most affordable average wedding costs on the list at $3,700, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious couples.
Mexico ranks eighth with a score of 69.69. As the most recent member on the list to accept same-sex marriage rights nationally in 2022, Mexico has the highest number of venues at 2,484 and an average wedding cost of $8,000, which is lower than the list’s average.
Portugal, with a score of 69.19, is ninth. Portugal offers an average wedding cost of $16,083, similar to Germany, but with a considerably lower number of venues.
Taiwan rounds out the top ten with a composite score of 67.25. As the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019, Taiwan offers more than 200 venues with an average wedding cost of $15,346, securing its spot on the list.
Methodology: Recent research by Emisil analyzed more than 30 countries to identify the best destinations for same-sex weddings. Initially, countries that have legalized same-sex marriage were identified, and only those allowing international marriages without significant restrictions were selected for further analysis. Detailed data on the availability of wedding venues, average wedding costs, and LGBTQ+ friendliness (measured by the World Equality Index) were collected. Countries were ranked based on a composite score calculated from these factors, ensuring the final list supports same-sex marriages legally and provides a welcoming and inclusive environment for couples.
