With social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok shaping perceptions of beauty, young adults are increasingly turning to cosmetic surgery to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence. However, this trend goes beyond mere aesthetics, as Gen Z sees cosmetic procedures as a means of self-expression and empowerment.

After the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) declared that the number of procedures rose by 102% in 2022, the organisation’s former president Rajiv Grover explained social media’s role.
“[In 2022,] social media became a powerful tool to connect and inform the public. Knowledge of plastic surgery has traditionally been through word of mouth, but this has now risen exponentially through digital word of mouth via Instagram,” said Grover in a statement.
“People are now seeing first-hand the transformational effects of cosmetic surgery on both physical and psychological wellbeing through the testimonies of real people.”
Empowerment and self-expression
Beyond conforming to societal norms, many procedures are viewed as a form of empowerment and self-expression. Whether it’s tattoo removal to embrace a more natural appearance or gender-affirming surgeries, young adults use cosmetic surgery to assert control over their bodies and define their own standards of beauty.

The accessibility and affordability of cosmetic procedures have significantly improved, making them more appealing. With advancements in non-invasive treatments and “tweakments”, Gen Z is exploring cosmetic enhancements as a viable option for early maintenance and age prevention.
This accessibility is crucial in a world where aesthetic enhancements are becoming normalised and integrated into personal care routines.

While cosmetic procedures can offer tangible benefits in terms of physical appearance, it’s essential to consider their impact on mental health. Some individuals experience a boost in confidence and self-esteem, but others may struggle with unrealistic expectations or feelings of dissatisfaction.
