Features to Look Out for When Getting a New Phone

A phone can do just about anything these days, and that makes choosing the right one even more challenging. From the latest specs to niche features, it’s hard to know what will actually improve your daily experience.  

Whether you’re upgrading or replacing an old model, keep a close eye on a few key factors that will make the biggest difference in how your phone performs. 

Performance and battery life 

These are two non-negotiables for many people. The performance of a phone hinges on the processor, which is like the brain of your device. A faster processor means apps load quicker and tasks can be done faster. RAM also plays a key role here. 

For everyday users, phones powered by the latest chipsets (like Apple’s A-series or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon) are a safe bet. These chips give you the muscle to multitask seamlessly, like if you’re playing bingo online and listening to music. 

Battery life is just as crucial, though. While a high-performance phone might drain quicker, look for a device that strikes a balance between power and efficiency. Ideally, aim for a phone with a battery that lasts at least a full day with typical use. 

Display and build quality 

The display is often the first thing you’ll notice, so it’s worth paying attention to. High-resolution screens (1440p or above) with high refresh rates deliver sharp, vibrant images, which is especially important for watching videos or viewing photos. OLED or AMOLED screens, common in premium models, offer deeper, more vivid colours, enhancing your viewing experience. 

The overall build quality is essential, too. A phone that feels solid in your hand is more satisfying to use. Look for phones with durable housing materials like aluminium or titanium, and check if the device has water and dust resistance (IP rating). 

Cameras 

Smartphone cameras have come a long way, and you don’t have to be a professional photographer to appreciate a good one. Whether you’re snapping family photos or documenting your travels, a quality camera can make a world of difference.  

Pay attention to both the resolution (measured in megapixels) and the quality of lenses. More megapixels don’t always mean better photos – consider the aperture size, which affects how much light the camera can capture, particularly in low light. 

Also, check for features like optical image stabilisation (OIS), which reduces blurriness, and night mode for clear shots in dim environments. And, of course, the front-facing camera is just as important for selfies and video calls. 

Connectivity 

Consider whether the phone supports the latest 5G networks. While it isn’t widespread yet, 5G offers faster download and upload speeds, so having a phone that supports it gives you some longevity.  

Also, look for features like Wi-Fi 6 for faster internet speeds in crowded spaces, and NFC if you plan to use your phone for contactless payments or digital tickets. These features might seem minor, but they make a noticeable difference in certain tasks.
