The World’s Best Stopover Cities For Your Next Trip

New research has revealed the world’s best cities for layovers, with Barcelona taking the crown. The study, from luggage storage company Stasher, analyzed and ranked the most connected cities to find the best places for quick layover trips, scoring each city across five weighted factors, including attractions density, quick bites establishments, safety score, traffic congestion, and airport proximity.
When it comes to turning a long wait between flights into a mini adventure, some cities stand out as the best stopover spots in the world.
Barcelona takes the top spot thanks to its near-perfect balance of accessibility and atmosphere. With 227 flight connections through El Prat Airport, a safety score of 1.6, and relatively low congestion levels, it’s a dream for travellers. The city is just over 12km from the airport, but what makes it shine is the sheer density of things to see and do — more than 245 attractions and 20 quick-bite establishments per 10 square kilometres. No wonder it scores an impressive 99.23 overall.
In second place, Amsterdam offers 276 flight connections via Schiphol Airport. Compact and easy to explore, the city packs almost 80 attractions and 11 eateries into every 10 square kilometres. With the city centre just under 12km from the airport, excellent safety, and a high-quality transport system, it’s an effortless choice for a rewarding layover.
Paris comes in third, boosted by Charles de Gaulle Airport’s huge global reach (291 destinations). While the airport is a little further out — 22km from the centre — the City of Light more than compensates with 350 attractions and 43 eateries per 10 square kilometres, making it one of the richest stopover destinations for culture, food, and sightseeing.
Vancouver ranks fourth, with its international airport connecting to 132 destinations. The city is less than 11km from the airport and known for its safety, while offering 57 attractions and 25 eateries in every 10 square kilometres — perfect for a quick taste of Canada’s west coast.
Rounding out the top five, Kuala Lumpur provides an excellent mix of connectivity and experiences. Its airport links to 137 destinations worldwide, and while it’s located 55km from the city, visitors are rewarded with almost 81 attractions per 10 square kilometres, plus affordable street food at every turn.
Other cities worth noting include Doha, where Hamad International Airport serves 196 destinations and the city’s compact size makes exploring easy. Miami follows closely, combining a lively food scene with 200 global connections. Boston is another standout thanks to Logan Airport’s proximity (just 4km from downtown), making it incredibly easy to dip into the city between flights.
London Heathrow — one of the busiest airports in the world — offers travellers a gateway to 227 destinations, but its distance from the city centre (23km) and higher congestion keep it from ranking higher. Finally, San Francisco rounds out the top 10, balancing solid connectivity, a vibrant food scene, and a healthy number of attractions per square kilometre.
