Why Hormonal Sleep Issues Are Leaving Women Exhausted and Foggy

From blanking on a word mid-sentence to rereading the same paragraph over and over, many women say their minds just feel… off. As “brain fog” becomes an increasingly common concern—especially among women balancing careers, caregiving, and post-pandemic burnout—sleep science experts are pointing to one often-overlooked culprit: hormonal sleep disruption.
A study published in the National Library of Medicine explored women’s lived experiences of brain fog, focusing on those at both the start (aged 18–25) and end (aged 45–60) of their reproductive journey.
What the Study Found
Daily Disruptions: Participants reported cognitive issues such as forgetfulness, mental fatigue, and difficulty concentrating—often triggered by stress, sleep deprivation, or hormonal fluctuations.
The Feedback Loop: Emotional responses like frustration, anxiety, and self-doubt weren’t just symptoms; they also intensified the fog, creating a cycle that was hard to break.
Coping Mechanisms: Many women reported turning to self-care routines, physical cues, or Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) in an attempt to regain mental clarity.
Identity Struggles: Across the board, women described feeling disconnected from who they used to be. While some older participants reported eventual acceptance, brain fog deeply impacted their confidence and sense of self.
Despite the growing conversation around burnout, many women still chalk up these mental lapses to “just being busy.” But sleep coaches warn that the pattern is both more serious—and more preventable—than most realise.
Rosie Osmun, a Certified Sleep Science Coach at Amerisleep.com, has worked with hundreds of clients experiencing foggy thinking due to chronic sleep deprivation.

“Most women I talk to don’t even realise they’re sleep-deprived until it starts affecting their words, memory, or mood,” says Osmun. “Brain fog is your brain telling you it’s exhausted.”
Why Hormones Matter
Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone directly affect circadian rhythms and sleep quality. For instance, low progesterone—common in the late luteal phase or postpartum—can lead to more fragmented sleep. Perimenopause is also frequently linked to night sweats and difficulty staying asleep.
And when sleep is disrupted, so is memory consolidation—a process that occurs during deep and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Without this reset, the brain struggles with attention, word recall, and information processing.

She adds,
“When that’s layered with chronic stress and the mental load many women carry, brain fog becomes much harder to ignore.”
