One-Glass Generation? Study Finds Young Brits Are Cutting Back on Booze

Share

Forget the swinging sixties or 90s boozed-up lads and ladettes, today’s twenty-somethings are teaching their parents and grandparents a thing or two about living a healthy lifestyle.

Almost half (42 percent) of young drinkers NEVER have more than one glass of wine, while a further 39 percent rarely have more than one.

In fact, three-quarters (75 percent) of Gen Z believe they’re living a more balanced life than the generations before them.

Over a quarter (28 percent) admit they always have half-drunk bottles of wine in their fridge for an average of a week before it’s polished off, while a third (35 percent) simply won’t open a bottle of wine if they don’t think they will finish it, according to the poll by Poco Vino, the single serve wine by Australian Vintage.

As a nation, 44 percent of Brits say they now regularly just have one glass of wine, with 68 percent admitting they’d skip opening a bottle of wine if they didn’t think they’d finish it.

Savvy Millennials and mindful Gen Z are also opting to order wine by the glass, not the bottle (20 percent), while a further 23 percent say they often leave unfinished glasses of wine on the table at a restaurant.

Other ways modern Brits are more controlled than older generations, include leaving a night out before midnight (32 percent), prepping their meals for the week (31 percent), not ordering a starter when eating out (26 percent), wearing the same outfit twice with pride (23 percent) – and ordering single shots instead of doubles (19 percent).

It’s no surprise that nearly half of younger Brits aged between 18 and 44 think that drinking to get drunk (49 percent) is uncool, with student pranks like traffic cones on statues (41 percent), dressing up the stag in silly outfits (32 percent), fancy dress themed nights (28 percent) and pub crawls (26 percent) all being considered outdated.

Instead, Millennial and Gen Z Brits prefer to go for a walk with friends (55 percent), have a games night (47 percent), go to the cinema (46 percent), meet for a cuppa (42 percent) or coffee (36 percent), cook together (33 percent) and go cheese and wine tasting (26 percent).

One in four (25 percent) say you can’t beat a movie marathon with pals, while a further 25 percent love walking the dog with their mates.

Tom Dusseldorp, CEO of Australian Vintage comments, “The research shows what we’ve been seeing for some time now – that Brits (especially younger generations) are embracing a more balanced approach to drinking. Our single-serve bottles are full of flavour, easy to enjoy, and thoughtfully made to fit effortlessly into the way people live and drink today.”
