How Winter Sun Savvy Are You When It Comes To Skincare?

Expert Shares Why And How You Need To Protect Your Skin, No Matter The Temperature
Although we’re often told of the damage that the sun’s UV rays can have on our skin, insightful new research commissioned by Hada Labo Tokyo1 – the number one skincare brand in Japan – has found that 65% of women feel it’s not necessary to wear sunscreen when it’s really hot and sunny. On top of this, a high 85% of women go out without sunscreen, even when it’s warm.
But, with eight in ten (79%) saying that they’re concerned about the sun’s impact on ageing their skin, the stats are scary.1 In fact, 91% of women believe that the sun can cause skin damage yet only a third (32%) of women actively avoid the sun. 1
GP, skin specialist and a member of the Hada Labo Tokyo Skin Care Panel, Dr Nisa Aslam says: “It’s quite alarming how many women aren’t wearing sunscreen. Sun damage can occur when it’s overcast. Even on a warm, cloudy day, you should be wearing sunscreen.”
The Hada Labo Tokyo study has also found that 57% of the females polled have skipped sunscreen in the hope of getting a better tan, but as Dr Nisa Aslam points out: “There’s no such thing as healthy UV tanning.”2
The Skin Damage Caused By The Sun
Whether we like it or not, the sun’s UV rays are harmful to our skin. “Too much UV radiation damages the DNA in our skin cells. Research has found that UV exposure seems to be responsible for 80% of visible facial ageing signs3,” warns GP and Medical Broadcaster, Dr Hilary Jones.
Speaking of the difference between UVA and UVB rays, Dr Hilary Jones adds: “UVA radiation accounts for 95% of the sunlight that reaches the Earth’s surface and this is the one which triggers the damage associated with tanning. UVA radiation also damages collagen and elastin in the skin, which accelerates the signs of ageing.4
“UVB radiation can’t penetrate as deeply as UVA, but it can cause serious damage to the skin’s upper layers, and trigger the DNA damage that can lead to skin cancer.”
If you aren’t aware of the difference between UVA and UVB rays, you’re not alone as 45% of women said that they didn’t know when polled by Hada Labo Tokyo.1
Protect Your Skin, The Right Way
Are you giving your skin the protection it needs against the sun’s harmful rays?

Dr Hilary Jones says: “The best protection is to avoid the sun altogether but the Hada Labo Tokyo research has found that few women are doing that. It’s also wise to wear a hat to protect the face and to limit time spent in the sun between peak hours of 10am and 3pm.”
Dr Nisa Aslam says: “No matter whether it’s sunny or not, high SPF sunscreen is essential. To help potentially stall the signs of ageing, a sunscreen that also contains nourishing skin-supporting ingredients, is essential. As the Hada Labo Tokyo data shows, 85% of the women polled believe that the sun causes skin dehydration yet only 41% think about hydrating their skin more during summer.”
Our skin, especially that on our hands and face, is always on show. So, caring for it is pivotal.
Hada Labo Tokyo has released two new silky-smooth sunscreens which are super-light and easy to apply.
“They combine SPF 50 sun protection with three different UV filters to provide proven protection against both UVA and UVB via physical and biochemical modes of action. Plus, both the suncare creams include three forms of the anti-ageing ingredient – hyaluronic acid:
· Sodium Hyaluronate — a water-binding hydration hero which helps replenish moisture lost from the outer-most layer of skin. Each molecule can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.
· Super Hyaluronic Acid — also known as sodium acetylated hyaluronate, which was developed to increase affinity with the skin and lock in moisture to provide prolonged hydration.
· Nano Hyaluronic Acid — also known as hydrolysed hyaluronic acid, is made up of even smaller molecules, to maximise moisture retention deep within the epidermis and help combat wrinkles and other signs of ageing.
“Bottling up three HAs across their suncare range should tick the boxes for many women as the new research from Hada Labo Tokyo has found that the number one quality that women look for in a body moisturiser is hydration,” says Dr Nisa Aslam.
The new Hada Labo Tokyo Water-Resistant Moisturising Sunscreen Face Cream5 is a light cream with an SPF 50, providing the highest protection against harmful UVA and UVB radiation.
“It also includes Panthenol, which helps to regenerate collagen and elastin, while the Hada Labo Tokyo signature ingredient, Super Hyaluronic Acid, is intensely moisturising, ensuring the skin is very well hydrated,” explains Dr Hilary Jones.
Meanwhile, the New Hada Labo Tokyo Water-Resistant Moisturising Sunscreen Sun Lotion SPF 50 features all the benefits of the face cream with a dry-touch consistency, delivered in a quick-absorbing and non-greasy formula.
Screenwriter and podcaster, Honey Ross says: “For me, as a very ghostly pale woman who burns almost the second, I step out into the sun, sunscreen is an everyday essential, so believe me, I have tried pretty much every SPF on the market. Some provide great protection, but feel horribly gloopy and greasy. Some make you glow like an angel but don’t seem to deliver the protection promised on the packaging. And don’t even get me started on the nasty chemical smell that seems to stick around forever with the wrong sunblock.”
“Always looking for the next best thing in skincare, when a friend recommended the Hada Labo Tokyo range it was a real Goldilocks moment. It’s so lightweight and doesn’t break me out, whilst still giving me a radiant glow and providing the SPF 50 protection my skin needs. But what really sets them apart is that the Hada Labo Tokyo Water-Resistant Moisturising Sunscreen Face Cream SPF 50 and the Hada Labo Tokyo Water-Resistant Moisturising Sunscreen Sun Lotion SPF 50 both contain three different types of HAs and other skin-saving ingredients, which keep my skin super hydrated.”
As 47% of women find that sunscreen makes their skin feel greasy, the new Hada Labo range will help to ensure that women will actually want to apply sunscreen.
It’s also vital to reapply sunscreen throughout the day.
According to the Hada Labo Tokyo data, four in ten women do not reapply sunscreen after exercising outdoors or playing sports in the sun. This is despite the fact that sweat can cause sunscreen to wash off.6
“To give skin the best protection possible, sunscreen should be applied after sweating or getting wet, as well as every hour generally,”7 says Dr Hilary Jones.

The sun’s UV rays are powerful, and the damage they can cause to our skin is staggering, whether it’s sunny or cloudy. “Sun protection and also super-hydrating ingredients are one huge step to helping stall the signs of ageing. The new Hada Labo suncare range combines a number of key skin-supporting ingredients to ensure we give our skin the love it needs,” adds Dr Nisa Aslam.
