Psychosexual Nurse Specialist shares expert tips on overcoming rejection and regaining confidence after a breakup
The quest to find the ‘perfect penis size’ has long caused debate, especially when it comes to relationships.
But is penis size grounds for a breakup? Well, according to thousands of anonymous Reddit users, it is.
Over the years, countless Reddit users have anonymously sought relationship advice about breaking up with a partner due to penis size. And it seems having an oversized penis is thought to be a valid reason for ending a relationship for many.
One viral post, which gained 30K upvotes and 15K comments, asked: ‘Have you ever broken up with a man because of his penis? If so, why?’. Several responses refer to large penis size, with one blaming an ex’s ‘mega penis’ for them partings ways, while another added that size and him only knowing one speed as the reason, and another explained how they couldn’t deal with the pain it brought them during sex.
And it’s not just women who have sought out the platform for anonymous advice, as one post from the subreddit r/AskMen asked: ‘Men of Reddit, has the size (too big or not big enough) of your dick ever been the reason for an ended relationship? What happened and how did you feel?’ While some answers refer to below-average penis size, others openly admit to being broken up with due to it being on the larger side, which caused issues such as bleeding during sex.

There’s also a subreddit called r/bigdickproblems where men openly discuss common issues they face having large penises. One post details ’10 Big Dick Problems’, including self-esteem issues stemming from rejection from women.
This Anti-Valentine’s Day, Lorraine Grover, Psychosexual Nurse Specialist at Oxford Online Pharmacy, explains how rejection based on penis size (big or small) can deeply impact a man’s sexual confidence and overall well-being.
She says: “Breakups are one of the leading causes of confidence issues in both men or women, as people are often left questioning their worth and desirability and pondering unanswered questions surrounding the root cause of their relationship ending.
“It’s interesting to see so many people being so candid online – albeit anonymously – about how they have broken up someone/been broken up with due to penis size.
“This can be incredibly damaging for the person who is broken up with and their future erectile function, as it triggers feelings of inadequacy, anxiety and stress – all of which can impact future relationships and lead to erectile dysfunction (ED)
“There is also a possibility that this could further exacerbate fear of rejection from future sexual partners or relationships. It’s important to remember that confidence is not just about size – it’s about self-acceptance, communication and what makes intimacy fulfilling beyond penetration.

Here’s some actionable tips for regaining sexual confidence after a breakup:
Shift the focus from size to satisfaction
“Too often, society focuses on size rather than satisfaction when it comes to sexual compatibility.
“However, it’s time we focused on the importance of communication, technique and emotional connection.
“Moving into new sexual relationships, try and be open and honest with new sexual partners, and educate yourself and them on techniques which can make the experience more pleasurable. For example, learning different positions, using lubrication and adjusting pace can improve comfort and pleasure for both parties.
Challenge negative self-talk
“It’s crucial that people stop defining their self-worth based on the size of their penis. True confidence comes from self-acceptance and understanding that intimacy is more than just penetration.
“Try practising positive affirmations and focusing on what makes you a great partner – in and out of the bedroom. Reframing your thoughts and shifting focus from size to connection can help to rebuild confidence.
Explore non-penetrative pleasure
“Remember that sex isn’t all about penetration, outercourse can be fun. Foreplay, oral sex, and mutual pleasure techniques can strengthen intimacy without the pressure.
“For example, if you’re working with a larger-than-average penis size, try focusing on foreplay to take the pressure off penetrative sex and ensure maximum arousal.

“With a better understanding of pleasure, this should help to relieve any performance anxiety and make sex enjoyable for both partners.
Build confidence beyond the bedroom
“If a rejection has knocked your confidence, it will likely affect your confidence in everyday life, too.
“Try engaging in more activities that boost your self-esteem, such as fitness, socialising or learning new skills – which will undoubtedly have a ripple effect on self-perception and romantic relationships.
Seek professional support
“If your problems with anxiety, self-esteem or erectile dysfunction become persistent, it’s best to get in touch with a psychosexual therapist.
“They can help you address any underlying fears, reframe negative thoughts and equip you with the strategies to overcome performance anxiety.”
