A staycation is a great way to explore what the UK has to offer

A staycation is a great way to explore what the UK has to offer, from beautiful beaches to the spectacular countryside, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

However, the UK’s unpredictable weather may make holidaymakers hesitant to book a trip.

For those planning a UK getaway and hoping for good weather, the team at Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays have analysed three years of rainfall and temperature data for the UK to predict the best week to go on a summer staycation, with it being the 8th – 14th August.

To find the best week for a summer staycation, the study separately ranked each week on the average rainfall and the average temperature across the last three years for the whole of the UK, before combining the two rankings to reveal the overall best date.

Across the last three years, the upcoming week of 8th – 14th August came out on top, having the 6th best average rainfall of 32mm, and the 2nd best average temperature of 21°C – with highs last year of 26°C.

And if this date doesn’t work for a staycation, the next best option following that is the 29th August – 4th September where it has the 4th best average rainfall of 29mm and the 5th best temperature of 20°C.

The four best dates to go on a summer staycation are:

RankDate PeriodAverage TemperatureAverage Rainfall
1.08/08-14/0821°C (2nd best)32mm (6th best)
2.29/08-04/0920°C (5th best)29mm (4th best)
2.11/07-17/0722°C (1st best)35mm (8th best)
2.06/06-12/0619°C (7th best)13mm (2nd best)

Alex Gwillim, staycation expert at the Devon holiday cottage company comments “Although the UK has not had the best summer so far, with the rain seemingly never going away, there is hope on the horizon for better weather. However, even if the weather isn’t what you hoped for, don’t let rainy weather dampen your spirits.

Before your trip, be prepared and research things to do indoors in case the weather takes a turn as there’s still plenty to explore and enjoy. These could include activities such as museums, wildlife centres and the theatre, or experiences such as craft workshops or cooking classes. Also, make the most of the local area and resident cuisines by visiting cafes, restaurants and pubs.”
