Hair Expert Reveals How To Create The Iconic Styles Seen at the Oscars 2024

Katie Allan is a Celebrity Hair Stylist & Founder of MAYFIVE Hair. Below she provides her comments on the iconic styles seen at the Oscars 2024, with her tips on how to recreate this yourself.
Zendaya – The Mob Bob.
We are seeing more and more bouncy shapes created instead of beach waves and here’s how to create it on your bob.
Prep the hair before blowdrying with L’Oreal Pli, in sections from the roots to the ends, when the hair is 50% dry make sure you add in your side parting.
Continue to dry the hair in the shape of the parting with a large soft brush to turn the ends.
Once the hair is dry use the GHD rise hot brush and wrap the hair around in sections, starting at the top of the parting and working your way down, as you take the hot brush out, clip the hair into barrels whist it cools
Once the hair has cooled in the barrels, release it and use a large soft brush like a Denman to smooth the hair out and spray onto place. We recommend using Davines Medium hold hair spray.
Emily Blunt- The Boho Bun
When drying the hair, using Davines Primer prep through the lengths and ends to give a light hold and soft volume. When drying the hair, turn the ends under with a round brush, this will help to wrap the hair into a bun rather than ends than are straight.
Use a hairband to to gently secure the hair into place at the crown. Pull the hair band out slightly from the crown, this will allow for the hair in the ponytail to not be pulled so tightly and allow for height throughout. Take a bungie band and wrap it around the ponytail to secure the shape in place with the height throughout.
Use a dry texturing spray, my favourite is from DAVINES and spray through the ends of the ponytail. Gently twist it around your fingers and back onto its self to create a messy textured bun.
Emily has a fish tail in her hair, the easiest way to do this your self is to use a hair weft, you can then do the fish tail in advance and clip it in. Band the hair weft at the top with a small elastic, then its a 2 strand braid taking small sections from either side and crossing it over alternatively. Secure at the bottom with a small elastic.
Place the braided weft, around the bun created and secure it with curly grips, tucking the top and bottom of the weft underneath the bun base to hide it
Gabrielle Union – The Ballerina Bun
Dry your hair smooth first, if your hair is naturally straight you can use a light blow-dry product like oi all in on milk, if it is curly or textured you will need to use something stronger, like a DAVINES Smoothing cream and holding moose. If you need to use straighteners, Smooth the hair away from your face being conscious to not create a parting in the hair.
Once your hair is smooth and dry, you can start to brush your hair with a soft Denman brush into a pony tail and the crown of your head. Using a light hold grip to get smoothness and then using a bungee band to secure it into place.
Using a light gel in your hands, L”Oreal Liss control, smooth over the hair in the pony tail and split into 2. Spiraly one to the left and the other to the right and cross them over to create a long rope through the ponytail and secure with a small hair band on the ends.
Twist the ends of the rope ponytail around the base and use curly grips to secure into place.
TOP TIP You can use a clean eyelash spoolie or tooth brush to brush any loose fine hairs at the hairline into the bun with a light hold wax or spray.
