Tips on insulating your motorhome before travelling

Although it’s getting slightly warmer as spring approaches, the weather in the UK still has its ups and downs. Its inconsistency means that you can never be too prepared when travelling in your motorhome, as it can be surprisingly cold – especially at nighttime.
Alongside insulating your vehicle for the winter, you should make sure you have motorhome insurance in place and have your route planned out in advance.
If you’re planning a trip in your motorhome and want to make sure you’re as warm as possible, here are some things to consider.
Insulation
Insulate your motorhome wherever you can with simple additions. Carpet tiles or even a fitted carpet can help to prevent heat from escaping through the floor of the motorhome and can make more of a difference than you might expect. Don’t hold back on adding a cosy rug for extra warmth and cosiness. You can get these for reasonable prices on the high street and online.
Make sure you consider practical elements, such as how easy they are to clean and whether you have a pet that could get them dirty easily. Perhaps you should opt for a darker colour instead of a pale colour like cream. Other ways of insulating your motorhome include replacing the windows and upgrading from single- pane to double-pane if required.
Meanwhile, draught skirts are handy to reduce the impact of wind and air beneath the vehicle. Otherwise, cool air can work against your insulation efforts. Draught
skirts are removable, which makes them a good option for the winter period.
Heater
Heaters are something you’ll be hugely thankful for when using a motorhome in winter. Most motorhomes these days have inbuilt heating systems where you can regulate the temperature using a thermostat. Just be sure to give it time to heat up to a comfortable temperature. Portable heaters do a great job of blasting heat into the space, meanwhile, a well-insulated space means the heat will trapped more easily.
Thermals
Beyond making tweaks to the motorhome itself, consider how you can make yourself feel as warm as possible. Pack plenty of layers and thermals to help regulate your body temperature. This way, you’ll be less reliant on using the heating system and will feel more comfortable when spending time inside the motorhome.
Thermal screen
Thermal screens are handy as they can help to reduce heat loss from the windscreen and passenger windows. They also help to prevent condensation from forming. Condensation can make the interior feel damp due to the moisture and often requires you to wipe down the windows. The less moisture there is, the warmer it will feel. Thermal screens are also a great tool for reducing energy costs as a result.
