YES To Pineapple Pizza – Nutritionist Tells Us Why

Share

The controversial debate regarding whether pineapple deserves a place on top of a pizza has been widely disputed.

Even world renowned chefs such as Gordon Ramsey have taken to TikTok to show their dismay for this popular pizza topping.

Whilst some argue that the natural sweetness of the pineapple adds depth and more flavour to an already delicious dish.

In response, Lily Keeling, registered nutritionist and chef from recipe box delivery service, Green Chef has confirmed that you SHOULD have pineapple on a pizza, thanks to its added nutrients and flavour.

Lily comments,

“Love it, or hate it, you can’t deny that adding pineapple onto a pizza can cause some heated discussions. However, it’s important to recognise the benefits that pineapple brings to the table.

“Not only does this tasty fruit add a burst of natural sweetness that complements the savoury flavours of pizza, but it’s also packed with vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, and antioxidants, which can help to support general wellbeing. Pineapple is also an excellent source of fibre which can help to promote a healthy digestive system.”

What other fruits can you add to a pizza?

While tomatoes and peppers are a traditional and nutritious pizza topping, Lily suggests other fruits to try for added goodness and new flavours.

Mango

Add a tropical taste to your pizza with a mango topping. This fruit complements spicy flavours from jalapeños or cajun chicken. Lily recommends dicing and sprinkling over the top of your pizza to blend the different tastes.

Strawberries

For a fresh and sweet burst, why not add chopped strawberries to your pizza? Strawberries are best paired with balsamic vinegar, spinach and black pepper.

Apples

Add crunch to your pizza with finely sliced apples and pair with traditional charcuterie elements such as prosciutto and cheddar cheese.

Pomegranate seeds

While pomegranate seeds are used in a number of savoury salad dishes, Lily advises they are a great addition to your pizza too. The juicy crunch complements herbs such as parsley and oregano, as well as nutty flavours.
