CUT THE CALORIES AND CARBS ON A NIGHT OUT!

NEW STUDY REVEALS THE ALARMING NUMBER OF BOOZE CALORIES GEN Z  AND MILLENNIAL BRITS KNOCK BACK, ON JUST ONE NIGHT OUT – AND THAT’S BEFORE THE LATE NIGHT KEBAB

Researchers surveyed 2,000 young Brits who regularly hit the town, and found many are entirely unaware of the vast number of calories they consume on a night out.

The research, from glucose biosensor and app, Lingo by Abbott, revealed that the average British reveler will consume twelve drinks on a big night out, equating to more than 2,000 calories – the equivalent of eating approximately one cheeseburger, one medium fries, 20 chicken nuggets and a serving of ice cream.

Despite this, half (47 percent) of those polled admitted that they NEVER think about the number of calories in their alcoholic beverages, a concerning admission considering the sheer amount we consume.

Calories on a night out

In fact, on an average night out, party goers are set to drink three cocktails, which averages out at 186 calories per drink.

The statistics also suggest there will be (on average) three glasses of wine (83 calories each), three pints of lager (200 calories each) and three shots with a sugary mixer (207 calories each) consumed.

And high calorie consumption doesn’t end once the hangover kicks in, as eight in ten (86 percent) admit they crave greasy, unhealthy food the day after a boozy night out.

The desire for greasy food is fuelled by feeling tired (52 percent), sluggish (44 percent) and an insatiable hunger (22 percent).

Sophie Bertrand, Resident Nutritionist from Lingo by Abbott, which commissioned the survey said: “It’s clear from the survey results that many people in the UK are unaware of the health implications that come with drinking.

Among other things, excessive alcohol intake can impair the liver’s ability to produce glucose and interfere with insulin sensitivity, leading to fluctuations in glucose levels (causing spikes and dips). Alcohol also negatively affects our sleep and lowers our inhibitions which causes us to reach for sugar or carb-heavy snacks that can cause a glucose spike.”

As the weather gets warmer and the summer drinking season picks up Sophie advises that, “you don’t have to skip your favourite drinks, but consume alcohol in moderation and try reaching for a light pint, dry wine and use low-sugar mixers in your cocktails. I also recommend people consider monitoring their glucose levels to help create healthier and long-lasting habits.”

It’s no surprise that 16 percent feel uncomfortable at the thought of how much they consume on a night out, while one in 20 (four percent) go a step further and confess they get angry at themselves.

LINGO’S TOP TIPS ON HOW TO CUT THE CALORIES AND CARBS ON A NIGHT OUT:

  1. Fancy a pint? Pick a lighter one – in general, lagers, stouts, wheat beers and IPAs are high in carbs. These can contain anywhere from 10-14 grams of carbs per serving compared to 1-3 grams in light beers.
  2. If you’re a fan of wine, reach for the dry ones – dry wines generally have less than three grams of carbs per 175ml serving. Dry wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Sav Blanc.
  3. Make mixers sugar-free and low carb by choosing mixers like diet fizzy soft drinks, diet tonic, club soda and zero-calorie seltzers
