Why Bulgaria Guarantees “Happy Campers” This Summer
“New data has revealed that Bulgaria is the most ‘campervan compatible’ country in Europe, pipping popular campervan destinations amongst Brits, such as France and the UK, to the post.
“The data comes from a study led by travel experts at Lotus Car Rental who, ahead of the summer holidays, wanted to shed light on where European holiday makers should head to to ensure they return as “happy campers”.
“Experts analysed factors across all European countries that typically impact the quality of campervan holidays. This included average yearly temperatures, wild camping laws, petrol prices, and volume of tourists, campsites, motorhome facilities, traffic and vehicle crime.
“All data was weighted and indexed to create an overall compatibility score, out of 10.

“Alexander Haraldsson, CEO of Lotus Car Rental, said:
“We wanted this research to help holidaymakers better plan their campervan trips this summer. We are particularly excited that the findings of this study may inspire holidaymakers to explore countries they might not have considered before. In an age where popular destinations often face challenges of over-tourism, we hope our research encourages campers to venture off the beaten path for truly memorable and unique holidays.”
“Bulgaria scored 7.25 out of 10, ranking it as the most campervan compatible country across all Europe, with no legal restrictions on wild camping.
“Bulgaria also scored highly on low-fuel costs, enabling campers to travel between its numerous national parks and mountains affordably.
“Eastern Europe fared highly in the study, with the top three campervan compatible countries being Eastern European: Georgia and Belarus ranked in 2nd and 3rd position.
“Both countries boast low fuel prices, relaxed wild camping restrictions, and glorious national parks to both pitch up by and travel between.
“Here’s how other European countries fared in the rankings:

“Despite boasting the second highest number of campsites in Europe, France fared poorly, ranking third least campervan compatible country in Europe. This was due to its high rates of vehicle crime and traffic levels.

“Switzerland ranked as the second least campervan compatible country in Europe. Not due to its scenic attractions (which are hard to rival), rather due to the country’s high cost of fuel, food, toll roads and campsites. Making it a highly expensive campervan destination.
“England placed bottom of the table as least campervan compatible country in Europe, despite England’s south coast and national parks remaining popular summer staycation destinations for Brits.
“This was largely due to overnight stay restrictions, limited carparking and overcrowded campsites, which make for less spontaneity, more planning, and ultimately many “unhappy campers”.
