Martha Stewart’s Kitchen Hack and 6 Expert Tips to Make Cooking Easier

Martha Stewart has long been the queen of clever, unfussy hacks in the kitchen. From scooping meatballs with an ice-cream scoop to peeling garlic by shaking it in a jar, her advice is always practical, efficient, and timeless.

Now, she’s back with a new space-saving idea that’s perfect for smaller kitchens. If counter space is at a premium, Martha recommends hanging your chopping board on a hook so it’s always accessible without cluttering up your worktop. Alternatively, an over-the-sink board instantly creates a workstation, offering extra prep space and making cleanup easier.

Martha’s latest hack is all about making your kitchen work harder for you, and it’s an ethos shared by Mimi Morley, Senior Recipe Development Manager at food box service. Mimi believes small changes can transform how we cook — and she’s shared six clever tips you’ll wish you’d known sooner.

1. Store Knives with a Magnetic Strip

Instead of cramming knives into a drawer or using a bulky block, attach a magnetic strip to your fridge or wall near the prep area. Not only does it free up counter space, but it also keeps the right knife within easy reach.

“Accessibility encourages deliberate knife use,” says Mimi. “You’re less likely to grab the wrong tool when everything is laid out efficiently.”

2. Get More Juice from Citrus

Before juicing lemons, limes, or oranges, microwave them for 15 seconds. This loosens the juice, making it much easier to extract.

“It’s a small fix that makes a big difference,” Mimi explains. “You’ll get significantly more juice, especially from stubborn limes.”

3. Peel Ginger with a Spoon

Forget knives or peelers — a simple spoon works best. The rounded edge scrapes away just the papery peel, following the ginger’s knobbly shape without wasting the flesh underneath.

“It’s faster, easier, and far less wasteful,” says Mimi.

4. Ripen Fruit Faster with Apples

Need ripe avocados or bananas in a hurry? Place them in a paper bag with an apple. Apples naturally release ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening.

“An avocado that would take days can be ready in 24 to 48 hours,” Mimi notes.

5. Soften Butter in Minutes

Forgot to take the butter out? Grate it with a cheese grater. The small shreds soften to room temperature much faster than a solid block, making it ideal for last-minute baking.

“It avoids the microwave, which can make butter greasy or uneven,” Mimi explains.

6. Stop Sticky Ingredients Clinging to Spoons

Before scooping honey, golden syrup, or molasses, lightly coat the spoon with oil. The sticky ingredient will slide right off.

“It’s a tiny adjustment that saves mess, prevents waste, and makes measuring more accurate,” says Mimi.

Between Martha Stewart’s timeless hacks and Mimi Morley’s genius tips, these tricks prove that clever kitchen shortcuts can save space, cut down on waste, and make cooking a whole lot easier.
