Planning a Hot Girl Hike? Stay Safe Outdoors This Summer
From jumping on the hot girl hiking trend to seaside escapes with friends, countless Brits will be embracing the outdoors and warmer weather this summer.
In fact, outdoor specialists Berghaus have spotted that searches for ‘long hikes near me’ have surged by 57%, while ‘camping trip checklist’ has risen by 56% over the last year.
However, it seems that many are cautious of the potential risks that come with spending time outdoors. New search data shows that queries for ‘what do ticks look like’ and ‘how to stop midge bites’ have increased by 124% and 50% respectively, over the last three months.
To help, the experts at Berghaus have shared how to avoid common risks and pests that come with the outdoors, including being geared up with the right clothing and accessories.

Risk: Dehydration
Solution: Always carry more water than you need
Becoming dehydrated can be a serious risk during hot weather, particularly if you’re doing physical activities like hiking. Failing to drink enough water can lead to headaches, dizziness, and in severe cases, heatstroke.
Therefore, it’s essential to drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you’re out and about, make sure to carry a reusable water bottle so you always have some to hand and can stay hydrated.
A purpose built backpack, which can hold a hydration bladder, is ideal for keeping water on you with ease. For longer excursions, it’s always a good idea to pack more water than you think you will need. This way, you can remain well-hydrated if you take a wrong turn or decide to extend your hike!
Risk: Heatstroke
Solution: Don’t ditch the long clothing
While it may be tempting to wear shorts and a vest when outdoors in the sunny weather, this could cause more issues if you’re not careful. Heatstroke is a common risk during summer, especially when spending long days outdoors, where your body becomes too hot and can no longer cool itself down.
To prevent the dizziness and nausea that can come with heatstroke, it’s crucial to stay hydrated and wear light, long, loose-fitting clothing. Wearing lightweight trousers or a long-sleeved shirt will protect your legs and arms from the UV rays and help you to stay cool when outside. You should also consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield your face and eyes from the sun.
Risk: Ticks
Solution: Always check your body after being in the outdoors

Ticks are small, spider-like parasites found in woodland and grassy areas that feed on the blood of humans and animals. The biggest risk with ticks is their potential to transmit Lyme disease, a serious bacterial infection.
When walking in areas where ticks are common, wearing long-sleeved tops and trousers can help prevent them from finding your skin. Using an insect repellent containing DEET on clothing and exposed skin is also an effective deterrent.
After spending time outdoors, it’s vital to thoroughly check your body for ticks, paying close attention to areas like the hairline, armpits, and behind the knees. If you do find a tick, use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure to remove, avoiding twisting it, as this could leave a part of the tick in your body. Once it has been successfully removed, clean the bite area and apply an antiseptic.
Risk: Drop in body temperature
Solution: Pack extra, protective clothing
It’s no secret the British weather is notorious for being unreliable, with bright sunny mornings often becoming a rainy afternoon. Being caught out in a downpour without the right gear can not only be uncomfortable but can also lead to a dangerous drop in body temperature.
While you should always check the weather forecast before heading out, it’s also important to prepare for potential changes to that prediction. Packing a lightweight, waterproof jacket and an extra layer, such as a fleece or long-sleeve top, is a great habit to get into. This ensures you have everything you need to adapt to changing conditions so you can remain comfortable and safe, whatever the weather brings.
