Skin Expert Elizabeth Japal Reveals How to Get a Radiant Spring Glow and Achieve Glass Skin

As the seasons change, so do our skincare needs. With over 2.8 million TikTok views and Google searches for “glass skin” hitting an all time high this month, the dewy, mirror like complexion trend is officially back in the spotlight. But what is glass skin and how do you achieve it without the need of an entire K-Beauty routine?

To help, Cult Beauty spoke to skin expert Elizabeth Japal from The Derma Lab to uncover the secrets behind this viral skincare trend and how to adapt your routine for a radiant, glass-like glow ahead of summer.
What is glass skin?
Glass skin refers to a complexion so smooth, plump and intensely hydrated that it looks like it’s made of glass, think clear, even-toned, and lit from within. Originating in Korean beauty, and its now resurfacing as a minimal, skin-first beauty trend.
The science behind the glass skin glow
“Glass skin is all about boosting your skin’s moisture levels while refining texture,” explains skin expert Elizabeth Japal “When your skin barrier is strong and your hydration levels are balanced, the surface of the skin becomes more even and reflective—this is what creates that iconic ‘glass’ effect.”
At a cellular level, glass skin is achieved by improving:
- Stratum corneum hydration (the outermost layer of the skin)
- Barrier function through lipids and ceramides
- Light diffusion across a smooth surface with minimal congestion
Here’s how to achieve glass skin for maximum glow
Start with skin clarity
“Glass skin is more than just dewy it’s about clarity, hydration, and smooth texture,” says Elizabeth Japal. “That means targeting dullness, congestion, and dehydration first, so your skin becomes a clean, even base for that signature reflective finish.”
Elizabeth recommends starting with a gentle chemical exfoliant look for products containing lactic acid or PHAs, which refine texture without stripping sensitive skin. “Regular exfoliation boosts radiance and helps other skincare absorb more effectively.”
Layer thin layers of hydration
“A true glass skin finish comes from building hydration in thin layers,” Jordan explains. Swap out heavy creams for a multi-step moisture routine: essence, serum, lightweight gel moisturiser, and a mist for extra bounce.
“Look for ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and panthenol they bind water to the skin and leave it plump, smooth, and light-catching,” Japal adds.
Skincare first priming
It’s all about skincare-first priming. “Before makeup, press a few drops of facial oil into the high points of the face like cheekbones, the brow bone, and bridge of the nose. It gives that lit-from-within glow and acts as a natural highlight.”
Add strategic glow
“Glass skin isn’t greasy it’s luminous,” Elizabeth clarifies. Elizabeth recommends using a water-based or light-reflecting primer under foundation or even going foundation-free. “A dab of balm highlighter (not shimmer) on the cheeks and temples finishes the look without masking the skin’s natural texture.”
Layer SPF for seamless glow
Not all SPFs leave a white cast or matte finish. Elizabeth suggests using a dewy SPF or layering a gel-based SPF under your makeup for extra hydration and protection.
Keep it consistent
“The biggest mistake people make is switching up their skincare too often,” says Elizabeth. “Consistency is key. Choose a routine that focuses on hydration, barrier support, and gentle exfoliation, and stick with it your skin will reward you.”
