Planning a late-season ski trip? These are the most snow-sure resorts, say experts
The ski season may be ending soon, but it’s not too late to enjoy a long weekend on the slopes if you know where to go for the best chance of snow.
In a bid to help those looking for a late season ski trip, ski tour operators Ski Solutions conducted research to reveal the most snow-sure ski resorts across Europe and North America for a late season trip in 2025.
They analysed 158 of the most popular ski resorts in the world, using a combination of data relating to snowfall levels, average temperatures, bluebird days, and more to determine snow-sure conditions, before ranking those with best records of snowfall during April over the last 17 years.
The top 10 ski resorts with the most snowfall in April (metres, average) are:
- Zermatt, Switzerland (2.53m)
- Saas-Fee, Switzerland (1.93m)
- Cervinia, Italy (1.76m)
- Gressoney, Italy (1.46m)
- Sölden, Austria (1.42m)
- Whistler, Canada (1.41m)
- Val d’Isère, France (1.38m)
- Passo Tonale, Italy (1.37m)
- Obergurgl, Austria (1.33m)
- St. Moritz, Switzerland (1.29m)
The car-free ski destination of Zermatt, located in the southwest of Switzerland (in the canton of Valais) took the top spot overall, with an average of 253cm of fresh snowfall during April.
During an average April week, it snows 4.7 days out of seven here, ensuring plenty of fresh powder and even a higher-than-average chance of a sought-after ‘bluebird powder’ day, whereby the sky is clear, the sun is shining, and the powder is fresh from heavy snowfall the night before.
Zermatt also boasts 3,820m of altitude and low average temperatures, helping historic snow to stay in place for longer. Even if you leave your ski trip until the Easter weekend, there is still a good chance of fresh and deep snow on Zermatt’s much-loved slopes.
In second place was Saas-Fee, also located in Switzerland. The main village in the Saastal area, this resort is renowned for its spectacular views, and skiers heading here in April can expect good snow conditions throughout their stay. With 193cm of snow fall typically landing this month, and fresh flakes expected 4.6 days out of every seven, Saas-Fee offers good odds for an enjoyable late season ski trip.
In third place was Cervinia in Italy, which lies at 2,050m above sea level, at the foot of the Matterhorn. With 176cm of snow typically falling here every April, and most weeks seeing 4.5 days of snow for every seven, again it was named another snow-sure spot for an April trip.
For those prepared to travel further afield, the resort of Whistler in Canada was the most snow-sure spot outside of Europe. Offering a comfortable 141cm of snowfall in the month (on average), and 4.6 days of fresh flakes per week in April, it’s perhaps no surprise that Whistler remains a firm favourite.
Revellers who are looking for optimal bluebird conditions should consider Val Thorens in France, which was named the best late-season location for these. In late March and early April, skiers have historically enjoyed 4.5 bluebird days per week.
Gaustablikk in Norway has also enjoyed a higher-than average number of late season bluebird days – 3.4 during mid-March, according to the data.

Snowfall also remains strong across many resorts, ensuring excellent skiing conditions, while the longer daylight hours makes room for even more time on-piste.”
