At this time of year the cold weather, central heating and other harsh environmental aggressors can wreak havoc on our skin.

Yet we often neglect to consider its impact on the skin on our scalp, with many experiencing dryness, itching and flaking as a result.

We spoke to Dr Catherine Leray, Head of Research & Development at THG Labs for some expert insight on seasonal dry scalp, its causes and how we can adapt our haircare routine to prevent it.

What are the common causes of dry scalp?

“True dry scalp is rare, as the scalp has a high density of sebaceous glands that produce sebum to keep it hydrated. Often, what appears to be a “dry” flaky scalp is caused by other underlying factors. Dandruff typically results from excess sebum, which fosters the growth of Malassezia, a yeast that feeds on sebum and releases oleic acid, irritating the scalp and accelerating cell turnover. Contrary to popular belief, research shows that people with dandruff tend to have higher sebum production and more active sebaceous glands.”

“Any irritation can exacerbate flaking, even if it’s not the root cause. Flakes occur on the stratum corneum, the skin’s outermost layer, which serves as a barrier against external aggressors and water loss. Therefore, preserving the scalp’s barrier function is essential. External factors like harsh products, frequent heat styling and environmental conditions such as air conditioning can also worsen flakiness/dry scalp. A multifactorial approach is recommended to restore and maintain scalp balance, helping soothe sensitivity while promoting a healthy scalp.”

How can a good scalp routine help combat a dry/flaky scalp?

“A mild cleansing shampoo with gentle surfactants will help to remove dirt, oil and product buildup without disrupting the scalp’s natural oils. Regular cleansing will also help maintain a healthier scalp environment. Look for products with salicylic acid to gently exfoliate, piroctone olamine to reduce flakiness, as well as moisturising and soothing active ingredients. Use an exfoliating serum with lactic acid or similar ingredients to gently resurface the scalp, effectively clearing dead skin cells and excess buildup.”
