The unpredictability of UK weather during autumn can make getting dressed a difficult task, with 42% of Brits admitting they find it harder to dress in colder weather due to the need for layering.
Curating an autumn capsule wardrobe is the perfect way to ensure multiple ‘ways to wear’ which saves stress no matter what your occasion. UK Google searches for ‘capsule wardrobe’ are up 49% compared to last month, indicating a desire amongst Brits to simplify things, however, a third (33%) lack confidence in knowing which pieces to add.
To help those struggling to bring together their outfits this autumn, Jo Collins, head of womenswear design at FatFace has compiled her top 10 clothing non-negotiables for men and women that can be effortlessly worked together.
Jo Collins explains the concept of a capsule wardrobe:
“A capsule wardrobe is a carefully curated collection of versatile, high-quality clothing items that complement each other and can be mixed and matched for any occasion. Autumn is ideal for perfecting a capsule wardrobe, as layering creates a need for various garments to mesh together.
“Relying on a smaller amount of staple wardrobe pieces simplifies your getting ready routine and is a sustainable choice that emphasises quality over quantity, ensuring you get more wear from each garment.”
Adding pops of colour
“A capsule wardrobe with neutral colours like black, white, and grey ensures cohesion, but adding a few pieces in autumnal hues like muted greens, cherry reds, or amber brings a pop of colour. Go colourful with jumpers, cardigans, or t-shirts, keeping bottoms and footwear simple to maintain balance.”

Jo’s 10 essentials clothing items:
- A white shirt
Women: “A white shirt is the ultimate transitional piece for autumn, blurring the lines between laid-back everyday attire and formal evenings. A staple in any capsule wardrobe, it can be worn loose or tucked into jeans for a casual look, or paired with statement jewellery and trainers. For a more polished outfit, style it with a midi skirt, tailored trousers, or layer under a sweater for added warmth.”
Men: “A few well-fitting shirts are key to effortless autumn outfits. Versatile and adaptable, shirts can be worn open or buttoned, tucked or loose. Begin with a neutral shade like navy or white, and add a second option in plaid or patterned for casual occasions.”
- A blazer
“An autumn capsule wardrobe is all about the ability to layer pieces that can be adapted to different occasions. A well-fitted blazer or suit jacket offers the perfect in-between to seamlessly transition between summer and winter.”
Women: “Dress up with a shirt and trousers for the office, or wear a light jacket with a sweatshirt and jeans when running errands. Transform any outfit by styling over a long skirt or dress.”
Men: “The term ‘smart casual’ can be tricky to understand, however, investing in a suit jacket you like can make the task much easier. Style with jeans and a t-shirt or jumper underneath depending on the temperature.”
- A chunky knit jumper
“Jumpers are synonymous with autumn due to their versatility and warmth. Consider the fit and fabric when choosing the perfect one to add to your capsule wardrobe. Think autumnal shades like oatmeal, brown, or navy, and choose a fit with enough room to layer.”
Women: “A chunky knit jumper with a long skirt and boots perfectly nails the brief of casual weekend attire, inject colour with a statement scarf and layer under a longline coat.”
Men: “A good quality knitted jumper can happily see you through autumn and winter. Pair with light-wash denim jeans for a relaxed everyday style or go darker with the jeans and add a shirt underneath for a smarter look.”
- Everyday t-shirts
“A few good quality t-shirts are essential for curating a capsule wardrobe. Opt for neutral colours that can work with the rest of your wardrobe, like white, black, or grey, and include a combination of long and short sleeves to mix up outfits and provide extra warmth when needed.”
Women: “The beauty of t-shirts is that you can wear them in many ways without getting bored. Dress one up with chunky accessories and a skirt, or style under a sweater vest or blazer for the perfect work outfit. Long-sleeved tops are ideal for transitioning summer items through to winter, as they can be worn under a dress or dungarees.”
Men: “A well-fitted white t-shirt is the perfect base for any outfit, style under a loose shirt for casual wear or with a suit jacket for smart casual. Allow the neckline to show when wearing under a jumper to break up the colour and add a contemporary touch.”
- A longline coat
“No capsule wardrobe is complete without the perfect coat. Choose a style that can be worn both with smarter attire over a shirt and trousers and when running errands – a long-line wool or trench coat would be ideal. Going slightly bigger with the fit allows the option of a jumper underneath whilst changing the silhouette.”
- Smart boots
“The unpredictability of autumn weather means it is crucial to leave the house prepared for all conditions. Investing in a comfortable pair of boots that can be worn in rain or dry weather means you’re always prepared”
Women: “A good pair of boots can seamlessly transition your wardrobe from September through to the new year. Dress them up with a long skirt or keep it cool casual with wide-leg jeans and a jumper.”
Men: “Opt for a tan leather design to add a pop of colour to a neutral outfit, or go classic with black or mocha.”

- Denim jeans
Women: “Having a couple of jeans options in your wardrobe provides a reliable base for any outfit. Opt for one statement piece like a wide-leg design to elevate an outfit, then keep it simple with the other – think skinny or straight leg.”
Men: “When it comes to men’s fashion, jeans are a non-negotiable. Lighter denim is best when styled casually or when transitioning through the seasons, while a darker shade is perfect for a smarter look styled with a shirt and suit jacket.”
- A cardigan
Women: “Cardigans are becoming a versatile, practical alternative to jumpers, making them a capsule wardrobe staple. Wear them buttoned or unbuttoned, layered over t-shirts, dresses, or jeans. If your wardrobe is neutral, a bright cardigan in red or pink adds a fun pop of colour.”
- A midi skirt
Women: “A midi skirt is a surprisingly versatile addition to an autumn capsule wardrobe. A long denim skirt can be layered with tights and boots during winter or styled with trainers in transitional weather. A flowy midi is great for office wear or festive parties. Pair with t-shirts, jumpers, or blouses for effortless styling.”
- Cargos and chinos
Men: “Nothing says men’s autumn fashion quite like a pair of trousers in a rich earthy shade like brown, green, or navy. Having a pair of chinos or cargo trousers in your wardrobe is the perfect comfy casual option and can easily work with any neutral jumpers and t-shirts. Keep it fresh with a pair of white trainers.”
