Gemma Nice, multi-award-winning sex and relationship coach, shares her thoughts:

“When listening to music, it brings you back into the parasympathetic nervous system, releasing hormones and chemicals called serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin. These are your calming hormones and keep you in a relaxed state. When listening to calmer, sensual music, the effect sets off a reaction in the brain, flooding the body with calming hormones.

This in turn makes you feel more relaxed, which then allows the blood vessels to open and the muscles to relax. There will be more blood flowing to the genitals, allowing for more sensations. The heart rate tends to find the beat of the music, and the breath starts to sync with each other, setting off another chemical reaction that brings you both closer together.

By adding different types of music, you can go with the rhythm of the beat, increasing sexual desire and using different positions to move with the beat. There may be deeper penetration and more intense orgasms through this. Keeping the music levels low will help you both find a deeper intimate connection between the two of you. You will still be able to hear it, so subconsciously this will be good, and you can also hear the noise of your partner, allowing you to be fully present and enjoy the whole experience.”

Sylvia Smith, relationship expert at Marriage.com, comments further:

“Music can bring out both the emotional and physical ingredients of arousal. Music genres, especially those that are very slow and heavily reliant upon bass lines, will influence breath stoppages and heart rates to simulate what occurs naturally in the human body during sexual arousal. This subconscious arousal could be somehow linked to sexual arousal. Music is a mood elevator that dispels anxiety and allows a person to be more free to be in the present and aware, which is the key ingredient to sexual arousal.”
