Interior expert on replicating the ‘clashcore’ trend this season

Bedding is having a moment right now, with Pinterest searches for ‘bedding decor’ up 237% YoY globally and Google searches for ‘bedding inspo’ up 1,275% compared to this time last year in the UK alone.
Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen a move away from perfectly matched home furnishings and instead a growing trend towards a mix-and-match style, which celebrates personality-filled homes.
Commenting on the ‘clash-core’ bedding trend, Rea Bell, Print and Colour expert at furn shares her advice on building a personalised, capsule bedding collection this autumn.
What is the ‘clash-core’ trend?
“The mix-and-match interior trend, also known as ‘clash-core’, is ultimately having more fun mixing different prints, colours and textures, moving away from feeling restrained to certain colour combinations. We’re all slowly letting go of previous colour ‘rules’ and realising interior design is about embracing all things personalised which is exciting.”
Why do you like the trend?
“‘Clashcore’ is a great way to start building a capsule ‘wardrobe’ for your bedding. As your cushions, throws and sheets don’t need to all perfectly match, you can be very selective with the items you bring into your bedding collection. With the ‘underconsumption-core’ trend currently circulating on TikTok, many people are looking to reduce the number of belongings, enabling them to enjoy their favourite items more frequently.
“This also makes it great from a storage perspective. If you’re limited on storage space, or perhaps you’re in student accommodation or an apartment, with this style you can create several looks from just a few items making it a practical option too.”
Where should you start if looking to replicate the trend at home?
“Colour! Always use colour as your starting point and pay attention to what you’re naturally drawn to and feel inspired by, whether it be bright and bold colours or softer, more subtle hues. From there, you can begin to add different colours and textures.
“For a more playful, dopamine decor finish, mix lots of different clashing colours. For a softer, quiet luxury feel, you can also replicate the trend by layering lots of different textures together in the same hue for an on-trend take on monochrome.
“Pattern is also key and there should ideally always be at least one on your bed, whether that’s gingham, striped or animal print. Adding a striped fitted bed sheet is one of my favourite ways of adding a second pattern in a more laid-back way.
“When considering a capsule bedding set, reversible duvet sheets are a great option. Reversible bedding offers you multiple looks without taking any more space up in your drawer.”
What are your favourite colour combinations for a mix-and-match style bedroom?
“Personally, I love brighter colour combinations, such as pink and butter yellow, as popularly seen on Pinterest, and also greens and purples. However, if you’re looking for a more classic choice for the autumn months, earthy shades such as burnt orange and terracotta look great paired with jewel-like jones, such as purples and deep green.
“Use cushions to bring in the different pops of colour. I always recommend having between four and six decorative cushions for a king-size bed, two and four for a double bed and a couple for a single. The trick to mastering this trend is not opting for matching cushions, and instead, let each cushion introduce a different colour, print or texture.”
