Old fashioned dishes including Shepherd’s Pie (29 percent), Toad-in-the-hole (21 percent), Beef Wellington (20 percent) and Jam Roly Poly (17 percent) are back in fashion, thanks to TikTok, according to new research.
The survey, which was commissioned by Camp Coffee, found that two-thirds (66 percent) of Brits under 30 years old now take cooking inspiration from TikTok and Instagram (50 percent), with over eight in ten (84 percent) admitting that they have noticed a rise in retro dishes appearing in their feeds.
In fact, 86 percent have been so inspired that they have even donned an apron and cooked up an old-fashioned dish themselves, with over a third (35 percent) going on to add to the trend by posting the results on social media.
Influencers are gaining millions of followers from cooking from decade old cookbooks, and making dishes such as Pineapple Upside Down cake and Blancmange.

Other dishes proving popular with modern Brits on TikTok include Shepherd’s Pie, Trifle, Coronation Chicken, Chicken Kiev, Toad in the Hole, Apple Crumble and Rice Pudding.
It’s no surprise that 88 percent of Brits say that the way they find and look at recipes has changed over the last five years.
A fifth (20 percent) have made Rice Pudding, while Coffee and Walnut cake (16 percent), Trifle (16 percent), Prawn Cocktail and Black Forest Gateau (12 percent) are also making appearances on young Brit’s dining tables and social media feeds, along with Quiche Lorraine (10 percent), Bubble and Squeak (ten percent), Arctic Roll (nine percent) and Baked Alaska (eight percent).
However, three quarters (75 percent) didn’t follow the recipe exactly, giving it a modern twist like grilling instead of frying (37 percent), adding flavouring to enhance the depth of flavour (35 percent), adding new ingredients (27 percent) and making it vegetarian (26 percent).
21 percent used a different cut of meat, while a fifth (13 percent) updated the recipe by making it all plant-based.
Katie Atkin, Brand Manager at Camp Coffee, comments: “It’s great to see that the British public is discovering, and making, classic dishes that have been around for generations. Even though the way they have discovered them has changed significantly, the end result is that these iconic dishes are standing the test of time and making appearances on dinner tables through the decades.”

“Camp Coffee has been inspiring kitchen adventures since 1876. That’s nearly 150 years of watching different recipes and food trends come and go, and this experience is why we have commissioned this research – to celebrate retro dishes and showcase how you can put a modern spin on them.”
When it comes to printed cookbooks, 92 percent claim they are falling out of favour because everything is online (53 percent), they end up sitting on the side untouched (40 percent), they’re too expensive (39 percent) and too big to store (36 percent).
A WHOPPING 91 percent of under 30s describe themselves as a ‘foodie’, with 56 percent saying they love to cook. 88 percent love cooking so much that they admit their ‘for you’ page on social media is filled with recipes and food images.
93 percent say they are cooking more from scratch now compared to five years ago because their cooking skills are better (51 percent), it’s cheaper (49 percent), their cooking knowledge has improved (39 percent) and they are more adventurous (38 percent).
In fact, the British public spends six hours a week cooking up a storm, with 84 percent spending more time in the kitchen now than five years ago.
Eight in ten (82 percent) believe that younger generations are more passionate about food than previous generations.

However, when it comes to advice on how to cook, nothing beats mum (68 percent) with TikTok (37 percent), food websites (24 percent) and Instagram (22 percent) close behind.
Camp Coffee is available at Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose stores nationwide. RRP is £2.
