Summer Makeup Mistakes

Do you wear the same makeup all year round? Makeup expert and founder of Look Fabulous Forever, Tricia Cusden explains that many people can be left looking washed out due to wearing makeup colours more suited to winter light.

Because the light changes from grey to clearer and warmer in the spring and summer months, Tricia recommends changing your makeup to adjust to the warmer light, incorporating brighter, more punchy colours to brighten your features. Follow Tricia’s top tips to see which colours you need swap to this summer along with other key summer makeup mistakes to avoid.

Winter vs Summer light

Some light colours are more forgiving than others, but all will emphasize certain perceived flaws while detracting from others. Makeup is perfect for working together with the light to draw out your interesting colours and features, but it needs to be adjusted as the seasonal light changes.

In winter, the light bouncing onto your face is mostly scattered light, through cloud rather than directly from the sun, and the natural light tends to be softer and cooler due to shorter days and lower angles of the sunlight.

Summer light is often brighter, warmer, and more direct, especially during midday. Yellow and orange light is a flattering one for the skin and any blue tones in lipstick or eye makeup will be diminished.

Seasonal colour palettes

Summer months call for a lighter, brighter makeup routine and a glowing complexion. You should be making the following changes in your makeup routine to strive for a soft, sun-kissed look with lots of dimension and colour.

  • Foundation and Concealer – In summer, consider opting for a slightly darker shade of foundation or a tinted moisturizer that matches a more sun-kissed complexion. A beauty balm is ‘one step up’ from a tinted moisturiser, offering lightweight coverage and a subtle glow without the need for foundation which helps prevent makeup from feeling heavy or melting in the heat.
  • Blush- Swap out any darker, berry-toned blushes for brighter, warmer shades like coral, peach, or pink. These colours can add a fresh and youthful glow to the skin and complement sun-kissed cheeks.
  • Eyeshadow -Transition from darker, smoky eye looks to lighter, brighter eyeshadow shades for summer. Experiment with warm neutrals, bronze, gold, or pastel hues to create soft and luminous eye looks that reflect the season’s vibes.
  • Lipstick – Trade deeper or blue tones lip colours for lighter, more vibrant shades in summer. Bright colours such a fuchsia or coral will really add to a summer look.
  • Highlighter -Embrace a dewy, luminous complexion by incorporating lighter, champagne or golden-toned highlighters into your makeup routine. Apply them to the high points of your face to accentuate features and add shape to your face.

Not utilising primers
Before applying makeup, ensure your skin is well-prepped, as this will help makeup to stick in the summer months. Mature skin in particular is more porous than its younger counterparts, so it can be challenging for older women to keep their makeup looking fresh all day.

The secret to makeup looks with longevity is to create a ‘barrier’ between absorbent skin and makeup. Cleanse your face thoroughly and apply a lightweight moisturizer suitable for your skin type. For older skin, opt for hydrating formulas that won’t settle into fine lines.

Using a primer is crucial for sweat-proofing your makeup. Choose a mattifying primer to control oil and sweat production in your T-zone and other oily areas. For older skin, look for primers that use aloe vera and silica to fill open pores and fine lines these will provide a smooth canvas for makeup application

Summer eyeshadow tips

Cleverly placed eyeshadow you can give the illusion of a wider eye, making you appear fresher and more youthful. For older skin, make sure you are using a matte eyeshadow, as shimmery or glittery colours can settle and accentuate fine lines.
