Poor hygiene, messy house, and referring to yourself in the third person: New survey of Brits reveals the most common ‘icks’ that lead to a breakup

In a new survey, Brits have spoken out about the ultimate relationship deal-breakers and common ‘icks’ which range from being messy at home to having a ‘sweaty arse’.

The study of 1,500 individuals across the UK, conducted by We Buy Any Home, aimed to uncover the most common ‘icks’ that lead to the demise of romantic relationships.

Topping the list of turn-offs is poor personal hygiene, with a staggering 77% of respondents citing it as a major deterrent. Following closely behind are behaviours like being rude to others (54%) and having a messy living space (25%).

Other ‘icks’ included living with parents, interrupting people, and the cringe-inducing habit of referring to oneself in the third person.

However, the threshold varies across different regions of the UK. Glasgow emerged as the city with the lowest tolerance for ‘icks,’ with a staggering 96% of respondents indicating that an ‘ick’ would prompt them to end a relationship. On the other hand, those in Southampton displayed a higher tolerance, with only 84% reporting that they would break up over such issues.

“We were intrigued to delve into the intricacies of what makes or breaks a romantic connection,” said Terry Fisher, property expert at WeBuyAnyHome. “Relationships can be a challenge, but for some, there are things that can simply lead to breakups.”

Among the top 10 ‘icks’ identified in the survey, these ‘icks’ were most likely to cause respondents to break up with a partner: poor personal hygiene, being rude to others, lack of humour, bad table manners, and having a messy house.

In addition to the predefined ‘icks,’ respondents were given the opportunity to voice their own turn-offs. Surprisingly, responses ranged from superficial traits like tattoos and long fingernails to more unexpected ‘icks’ such as not asking questions and having a ‘sweaty arse.’

“Separation can be messy, especially when it comes to selling a property. There’s a lot of factors to consider, but if your other-half’s ick is really taking its toll on you then it might be time to consider your options,” says Terry.
