WHY EVERYONE IS LOVING THE ‘DAD BOB’ – HAIR STYLIST REVEALS ALL…
Hair Stylist, Poppy Hampton from MAYFIVE Hair provides her thoughts on the current ‘dad bob’ trend, which is the low maintenance style we all need and celebs are loving!
What is a dad bob?
The dad Bob is a longer, slightly more relaxed, version of the French Bob. It’s effortlessly cool and gives a 90’s vibe. The length is anywhere between the chin and collarbone.
What do you think makes this a popular hairstyle these days?
‘Dad’ style has been huge for a while and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. The chunky Dad trainers, Dad jeans and oversized fits are seen everywhere at the minute and the dad Bob fits perfectly in that aesthetic.

Have you noticed any celebrities wearing the trend?
Yes! Hailey beiber has recently gone for the chop and it looks so cool and chic. It’s also been seen on the likes of Emma Stone and JLO who have embraced the trend.
Does this haircut suit any specific face shapes/hair types/hair textures?
It can be bespoke to any hair type and texture and with the right products and styling it can look great on anyone. It can be worn formal or polished, and can be worn with natural curls. Work with your Stylist to ensure the face framing pieces compliment your face shape as it can suit a wide range of face shapes and hair textures.
How should we ask for a dad bob in the salon? Should we prepare anything in advance?
You want to ask for a blunt cut and if you have finer hair this is perfect for making your hair appear thicker. If your hair is thick then some light layering and texturising will help to avoid it looking too triangular.

Any tips for styling a dad bob?
This is such a versatile look whilst still being low commitment and doesn’t have to mean a completely new hair routine. You can blow it out with some bounce for a 90’s feel, if your hair has a natural curly texture you can wear it natural with some curl product, if you’re having a lazy day (or it’s hair wash day) you can do a half up half down with a claw clip, it can be tonged for a beachy feel and now we’re coming into summer, you can even leave to air dry.
How do you see this trend evolving in the future?
It’ll stay with the 90’s feel and we’ll see more of it being styled with the blow-out vibe with kicked out ends and volume.
