To find out what have been the biggest hairstyle trends over the past four years Beauty Club London, a luxury salon in the heart of London, has analysed searches for different hair services, ranging from extensions to colouring, to find out which are the most popular.
The latest research reveals that face-framing highlights had the biggest increase in searches from 2020 to 2023. Face-framing highlights are thin strands of lighter-coloured hair strategically placed near the front of your hair to help accentuate your facial features. Celebrities including Eva Longoria and Beyonce rocked this trend in 2023.
Since 2020, interest in this hair colour service has risen by 30 percent in the UK. In London, there has been a 118 percent increase in searches for face-framing highlights, making the capital the top city in the UK for this hair colour service.
There’s also been a dramatic increase in interest in face-framing highlights in Edinburgh. In the past four years, the search volume has increased by 50 percent. Bristol closely followed with a 40 percent increase in interest across the past four years.
In the first quarter of the year, there has been an additional 12 percent search increase in face-frame highlights, showing that this hair colour service is here to stay in 2024 and beyond. Celebrities such as Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner have both tried this look, with Hailey’s hair currently featuring subtle face-frame highlights.
Highlights have also grown in popularity with a 23 percent increase in searches for this hair colour service over the past four years. This is the perfect option for those looking to add dimension to their hair. Highlights have been most popular in Swansea, where there has been a 129 percent increase in searches for this service.
While hair trends can change quickly, balayage is here to stay. Interest in this hair colouring technique peaked in 2021, with over 210,300 average monthly online searches. However, this still proved popular in 2023, with over 142,000 average monthly searches.
Celebrities like Jesy Nelson, Margot Robbie and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have all rocked this effortless colour. This hair colouring technique has seen the biggest increase in popularity in Swansea, Cardiff and Milton Keynes.
Long hair has always been a trend – but for those who don’t have naturally thick hair, extensions have become a popular option. Tape in hair extensions are perfect for adding length and volume while maintaining the health of the hair. These have been particularly popular in London, Preston and Swansea, which have all seen a 67 percent increase in searches for this service.
Overall, there have been over 50,000 searches for these types of extensions in the past four years, proving they’re a popular option for enhancing natural hair.
Interest in clip-in hair extensions also skyrocketed in 2022, with over 27,000 average monthly searches for these types of extensions. These temporary extensions are the perfect solution for a quick length and volume lift. Blending with the natural hair, clip-ins can be easily applied, removed and reused.
These types of extensions have been incredibly popular in Swansea, Milton Keynes and London.
Among many celebrities, Jenifer Lopez is well known for embracing hair extensions to achieve her long hair.
Bonded extensions, which are bonded to the hair with a keratin formula are ideal for longer lasting extensions. With an average monthly search volume of 4,200 across the UK, these are still a popular option. Residents in London and Swansea are particularly interested in these types of extensions, with a 67 percent increase in searches over the past four years.
