Are you attending a wedding but not sure what to write on the card? Well, you’re not alone; according to Google, 17,000 Americans (and 38,000 people globally) ask the same question online each year. 

Kris Labang, the owner of Hawaii Wedding Photography, explains how to write a wedding card that’s both meaningful and appropriate. 

It Depends On Your Relationship

For close friends and family, a personal and intimate tone is appropriate. You might use phrases like, ‘Love you both’, or ‘We’ll be cheering you on!’ In some cases, a touch of humor may be appropriate, such as, ‘About time!’ or even, ‘You’ll make beautiful babies!’ Referencing a special time you shared with the couple or an inside joke can help make the card even more personal and meaningful. 

For colleagues or distant relatives, your message should still be sincere, but with a more formal tone. You might use phrases like, ‘Warm wishes’ or ‘heartfelt congratulations.’

Congratulate Them

A simple “Congratulations on your wedding!” is often enough, but feel free to elaborate based on your relationship with the couple. Perhaps you played an important part in them getting together, or they’ve overcome some obstacles to reach this point. Referencing something like this can help make your card more memorable.

Use Other People’s Content

If you’re completely stuck on what to write, you can always buy a wedding card with a pre-written message. There are also blogs and wedding/bridal websites that can give you some written examples of appropriate things to write.

To add a touch of literary elegance, delve into quote and poetry websites. You could choose something inspirational or funny, as appropriate. Using a quote from someone you know the bride and groom love or find inspiring can also show you’re thinking about them. 

Mention The Future

Offer the couple your best wishes for their journey ahead, and think of their hopes and aspirations, as well as what you hope they’ll have together. You could say, ‘I predict lots of laughter,’ or discuss some of the activities they’ll be pursuing together, such as if they have a shared hobby they’ll be pursuing together in the years to come.

If You’re Unable To Attend The Wedding 

In this scenario, express your regret that you can’t be there. Use phrases such as, ‘I’ll be thinking of you on the day.’

Even though you’re not attending, it may still be appropriate to provide a wedding gift along with your card. That way, you can demonstrate that you value the happy couple.
