Whether you’re hoping to plan a memorable first date or looking for a new date idea to keep things fresh in your long-term relationship, why not put your fitness to the test with an active date this Valentine’s Day?

Ideal for both fitness fanatics and less active partners looking to get out of their comfort zones, an energetic date is a great way to try something new and have fun while getting your daily movement in. Plus, active dates can be especially effective when it comes to putting both your teamwork and communication skills to the test.

Looking for some active date idea inspiration to impress your partner? Rachel Clinkard from shoe retailer Charles Clinkard shares five fitness-based dates for couples to give a go this Valentine’s Day and beyond, as well as some handy tips on what to wear for your adventures.

Hiking

The great outdoors is the perfect setting for a romantic meet-up, especially out in nature where you can get closer to natural beauty, whether it’s in the form of mountains, the seaside, or blooming woodland. And what better way to get out in nature than in the form of a hike? One of the great things about this activity is that there are different levels of intensity and accessibility, meaning that you’ll likely be able to enjoy this date with your significant other no matter your fitness levels.

Hiking is a fantastic date idea for couples new, old, and anything in between. It gives you a chance to unplug and get away from the distractions at home, allowing you to really connect with one another. As it’s just the two of you out in nature, it encourages communication, so the chances are you’ll come away from your date having learned something new about your partner, whether it’s your first date or your 500th!

What to wear: Footwear is one of the main considerations when it comes to hiking. A good pair of walking shoes or boots is essential, especially when navigating rocky terrain. As you’re in the great outdoors, make sure to dress weather appropriately, and always pack a waterproof in your rucksack. Even if it isn’t raining when you set off, there is no predicting the British weather sometimes!

Dancing

What better way to add some passion and romance to your date night than with some dancing? It allows you to get close and connect, as well as learn something new together. And of course, it also gives you some moves to show off at the next party you attend! There are plenty of different dance styles to try out, so you and your significant other have the freedom to opt for something more heart-pumping, like Zumba, or something a little less intense, such as ballroom dancing.

The great thing about an active dancing date is that it can be out of the house in the form of a class, or in the comfort of your own home by following an online video or simply having some fun by showing off your moves. This makes it an ideal fitness-based romantic date for couples of all budgets.

What to wear: This largely depends on the type of dancing you plan on doing, and whether it’s at home or a class. For contemporary or modern dance, a comfortable pair of trainers and activewear is usually best. For ballroom or Latin dances, such as salsa or Argentine tango, a smart pair of shoes or high heels with leather or suede soles is usually recommended, along with your favourite dress or shirt and smart trousers. However, in some beginner’s classes it is recommended that first-timers come in trainers for comfort, so make sure to check this before you book.

Cycling

Another fantastic choice for couples looking to get outdoors on their active date, cycling is an ideal option for fitness-loving partners, as well as those who are simply interested in getting a little more active. With cycling you can just enjoy getting out and about on two wheels with your partner, or you can go one step further and make it two dates in one by cycling to another activity. This two-part date could be anything from cycling to the beach to enjoy a walk at sunset, to simply biking to your favourite café for a coffee and a bite to eat.

When organising a cycling date, it’s best to plan out a route beforehand to ensure it is well suited for a romantic activity. Choose paths which allow you to cycle side by side for long stretches so that conversation can flow easily. Alternatively, you can put your teamwork to the test and get even closer by riding a tandem bike!

What to wear: While serious cyclists may have specialist cycling shoes, a regular pair of flat trainers is a good option for amateurs. You should however ensure that the shoes you choose have adequate grip to prevent slipping on the pedals, and waterproof footwear can be especially useful for this outdoor activity. You don’t need any specific pieces when it comes to clothing, although it’s best to avoid dresses, skirts, or loose-fitting trousers to prevent them from getting caught in the spokes.

Tennis

If you’re looking for a more competitive fitness-based date, tennis could be the perfect option for you. This cardio sport will get your heart racing and can be great fun for couples who enjoy going head-to-head. There are many free outdoor tennis courts around the country which are open year-long, as well as affordable indoor courts in many areas.

Looking to turn your active date into a social occasion? If so, consider turning it into a double date by inviting another couple to play doubles tennis. This is the perfect opportunity to put both your skills and teamwork to the test, as well as give you both an opportunity to catch up with some friends.

What to wear: A lightweight and breathable pair of tennis trainers is the ideal shoe for this active date, and a good choice if you plan on playing often, however a normal pair of light and supportive trainers will suffice if you don’t play regularly. When it comes to clothing, your usual workout gear will do the job. When playing outdoors in cold weather, a lightweight workout jacket will help you stay warm and can easily be zipped off when needed.

Rock climbing

For couples looking for an adventurous option to put their fitness skills to the test, rock climbing is an exciting date idea for partners old and new to try. This is something truly unique, and the chances are you haven’t done it during a date before, so it can be a great way to make your date more memorable. It also gives you the opportunity to learn something new together if neither of you has done the activity before.

There are several indoor rock-climbing walls up and down the country if you want to avoid getting stuck in the elements during your first time. However, if you’re both more experienced in the sport, or you’re simply up for more of a challenge, there are various places you can give it a go outdoors with guidance from an instructor or in a group setting.

What to wear: For rock climbing you will need specially designed rock-climbing shoes to help you stay close to the wall. Most places will rent these to you when you turn up for your session. When it comes to clothing, flexibility is key. Opt for a stretchy pair of leggings or loose-fitting comfortable trousers, as well as a loose T-shirt which doesn’t restrict shoulder movement.

“Active dates can be a great way to add some spark to a relationship, old or new. For one, they often encourage communication and teamwork, helping you get on the same page and connect. And as with many forms of fitness, such as tennis, they can encourage some healthy competition, making for a fun and exciting activity.

“Whichever of the active date ideas you decide to give a go from this list, comfort is key, so ensure you’re both wearing the most appropriate clothing and footwear to enjoy the date to the fullest. Fortunately, most of these ideas can be performed wearing versatile fitness apparel which you may already own, such as trainers or walking shoes.”
