Cosy Christmas Staycation

Christmas staycations are increasing in popularity as people look to combine festivities with idyllic settings. ‘#Christmasstaycations’ on TikTok has seen a huge 2.1 million views, as people look for inspiration and last year saw a 24% increase in Google searches for ‘Christmas holidays UK’, compared to the previous year. With searches set to be on the rise again for this Christmas.

To help those planning a festive getaway, Alex Gwillim, staycation expert at Devon-based Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays shares her tips on how to have the ultimate cosy Christmas staycation.

“Not everyone wants to be home for Christmas. Sometimes a home-from-home is what you need to get into the festive spirit. Whether that’s to get the whole family together under one roof or just for a change of scenery and to bask in one of the many beautiful surroundings across the UK.”

Pick a property that suits your festive needs.

“When booking a staycation home, there are different features I’d recommend looking for which will depend on the size of your party – as well as your plans whilst you are there.

If you’re looking to have a quiet and cosy getaway, perhaps as a romantic break, look for a property that has a log burner or a fireplace to snuggle up in front of. If you are a larger family group, a big kitchen with a dining table is a must, as well as a good size living area to spend some quality time together by playing fun family games.”

Make the most of the local area.

“Just because you’re away doesn’t mean you can’t carry on with any at-home festive traditions that you may have. Make sure to incorporate them into your getaway, such as going on a crisp winter walk.

Explore local surroundings by going for a hike in nature, visiting Christmas markets or cosying up in a local pub. Or, you can be adventurous by trying something you may not usually get a chance to at home, such as a festive dip in the sea. Ultimately, Christmas is about making memories and spending time with your loved ones.”

Stress-free Christmas dinner.

“Cooking Christmas dinner can be stressful and naturally, cooking one whilst on a staycation is going to be different from in your own home.  If you are planning to cook in a kitchen that isn’t yours, I would recommend trying out the oven as soon as you get there and figuring out how it will work for you on the day.

To save the stress of buying food when you get to your property, schedule a food delivery for your arrival to save any last-minute panic. Keep what you’re cooking simple and stick to recipes you know, sharing the cooking tasks where possible. Remember, you are on holiday to have a relaxing and fun time. And if cooking isn’t your thing, you can always go to a local restaurant who may be serving Christmas dinner instead.”

Keep the Christmas spirit.

“Keeping the Christmas spirit alive whilst away is important, especially if you’re going on a family trip with children. One way to do this is through decorations and in our cottages, most of the owners decorate for Christmas. Taking the hassle out of your arrival with a fully decorated tree and lights. For any special requests, we’ll always do our best to help.

Before you head on your staycation, so that Father Christmas knows which house to come to, get your children to write a letter to him which lets him know the address to deliver their presents to. Then, to keep any presents hidden, pack them in a spare suitcase and hide them in a wardrobe away from little eyes.”
