Lisa Mason Poyner, Group Director of Aesthetic Services, Élan Laser Clinics, has revealed how people can combat the UKs 5 most common skin conditions – active acne, rosacea, hyper pigmentation, sun damage and pitting & puckering.

Acne – “Acne is a condition affecting nearly 90% of people at some point in their lives. While most people experience acne on their face, backne (acne on the back) affects more than half of individuals with acne, and for 15% of people with acne, breakouts also occur on their chest.”

Rosacea – According to the Acne and Rosacea Association UK, 1 in 10 people in the UK have rosacea. But with UK Google searches for ‘what does rosacea look like’, ’best rosacea treatment’, and ‘rosacea causes’ up by 180%, 110%, and 50% respectively. Rosacea is a common skin condition that affects the appearance of facial skin. It can result in the skin appearing to be blushed or flushed with more visible blood vessels.

Hyperpigmentation – “43% of women in the UK are concerned about the hyperpigmentation on their skin. Celebrities like Jenna Dewan, Louise Redknapp, Kim Kardashian, and Kate Ferdinand have all revealed their struggles with skin pigmentation, and UK Google searches for ‘hyperpigmentation treatment’ are up by 170%.”

Sun Damage – “Skin conditions can develop as a direct result of exposure to the sun. Ultraviolet light found in the sun’s rays is harmful to skin cells and damages them over time. Damaged skin cells are more prone to skin conditions, some of which can be dangerous. Sun damage can lead to a variety of common skin conditions that affect both the health and appearance of the skin. Wrinkles are most commonly associated with sun-damaged skin; however, sun damage can cause anything from sunburn to cancer. Sun-damaged skin can be treated to help ease symptoms and sometimes even reverse some of the effects of the sun.”

Pitting and Puckering – In the worst cases of acne, such as cystic acne, it is possible for pitted scarring to occur. One out of five of those who suffer from acne will be left with acne scarring. Affecting almost a third of those who have moderate to severe acne vulgaris, scarring can cause long-term self-confidence issues.
