The words ‘acid’ and ‘skincare’ may feel like they shouldn’t go together, but these active ingredients can help to treat acne, wrinkles, scarring and uneven skin tone – not to mention the glow factor.

Which skincare acids are most popular with the nation?

This week, newly launched community-led beauty marketplace Sourcerie carried out a survey to find out their customers’ favourite skincare acids, with some surprising results. They found:

  • 46% of shoppers voted Beta-hydroxy Acid (BHA)
  • AHAs and PHAs closely followed with 8% each1
  • But a whopping 38% admitted that they didn’t know anything about acids in skincare1

Taking the confusion out of shopping for acids, Sourcerie’s personalised quiz assesses your skin type, concerns and goals, resulting in bespoke matches with over 90% accuracy – because those with the same skin type and concerns have tried, tested and loved them for you.

Your guide to skincare acids:

Alpha-hydroxy Acids (AHAs)

AHAs are the most commonly used acids. They are primarily used to exfoliate the skin and also promote collagen production. The AHA heroes you’re most likely to have heard about include citric acid, glycolic acid, malic acid and lactic acid.

Beta-hydroxy Acid (BHA)

Roll out the red carpet for the nation’s favourite acid. There is only one BHA but it’s a big name: salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is also an exfoliant, but it gets deeper into the pores than AHAs, so it is a perfect remedy for break-outs or acne.

Poly-hydroxy Acids (PHAs)

For those that want to exfoliate without the risk for irritation, poly-hydroxy acids are for you. These are perfect exfoliating acids for those with sensitive skin.

Hyaluronic Acid

Unlike the others, this acid is not for exfoliation – instead, hyaluronic acid gives your skin an instant hit of hydration. Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000x its own weight in water, making it perfect for replenishing the skin’s moisture.
